My time at h&b

Background

Holland & Barrett is the UK’s leading wellness retailer and one of the largest in Europe where I spent much of my working career.  Operating in the last 10 years at c-suite level I worked under both a company owned and private equity model helping double H&B profits, to £157m before a private equity sale, delivering on strategic planning, deliverable campaigns and budget control.

Overview of main achievements

  • Key player in delivering 35 consecutive quarters of like for like growth delivering on strategy with clear ROAS at the same time managing cost and spend.
  • Held successful agency pitch process to class A London creative agencies and launched the good life proposition (complete brand transformation) across all areas of the business successfully credited with becoming a top 50 consumer superbrand.
  • Re-brand of entire food category packaging to support brand proposition.
  • Production of full suite of TV adverts and support media to complement strategy from brief to completion with proven uplift in focused areas on sales vs. target creating an award winning campaign for customer activation (CIM Excellence Award 2015).
  • Introduction and management of the revised omni-channel approach to ensure synergy across all channels with consistent TOV and messaging.
  • Savings in excess of £1.5 million made due to tenders, negotiation and proposed tests on approved  marketing budget.
  • In-store experience heading up the marketing side of the H&B More proposition – first store launched in Chester in 2015 and was followed up by several others including flagship store in Marble Arch.
  • Successfully entered the business for The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade  which H&B won in 2016.
  • Delivered multi million pound events and charity days.
  • Responsible for all areas of marketing/advertising/promotional strategy which enabled the Company to over achieve on target and footfall metrics.
  • Successfully launched the new loyalty card to customers’ via media, PR and in-store communication responsible for a 400% increase in card sign ups during this time (measured on post activity average).

primary responsibilities

  • Controlled all aspects of brand and retail marketing internationally including brand development and awareness, strategy, budgets, social media, customer segmentation marketing, events, PR, national advertising (ATL & BTL including TV), print management (from brief to completion), agency management, man-management and development of a team of 16 plus the in-house design function of 8.
  • Managed regular third party tenders in-line with the company procurement process.
  • Compiled comprehensive creative/advertising briefs, overseeing large TV advertising and  promotional campaigns, managing external agencies.
  • Produced all written communication for the CEO. 
  • Social media and content – strategy, agency and in-house management and reporting.  
  • Event and Sponsorship co-ordination from bi-annual conferences (1,500 plus) to supplier and charity days (500 plus).
  • Managed the magazine portfolio of the UK’s best-selling health & beauty title and publishing agency. 
  • Headed up internal omni-channel long-term strategy in line with the channel plan to ensure a cohesive approach to all brand activity and communication across all digital and offline channels.
  • Complete control of marketing spend with a proven record to work within strict budget parameters.
  • Responsible for all print buying and management from brief to completion including regular tender process. 
  • Worked alongside the CRM and online teams to guarantee a multichannel approach to all projects.
  • Initiated, developed and implemented all marketing and promotional activity across three brands covering in excess of 1,000 stores.
  • Oversaw all design activity from brief to completion including in-store promotions and bespoke displays to vehicle livery, store fascias and packaging.
  • Managed the strategy and re-branding for the Dutch and Belgium acquisitions.
  • Misc -  new store openings, promotions, direct mailers/catalogues, communications and the company mystery shopping program.
